LA Amp Show ’10 – Goodsell Amplifiers Valpreaux 40 Demoed by Phil X

via premierguitar:

www.premierguitar.com PG’s Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2010 LA Amp Show where he visits the Goodsell Amplifiers room. In this segment, we get to see and hear the Valpreaux 40 (a prototype) in action compliments of guitarist Phil X. The Valpreaux 40 is a 40 watt combo inspired by certain Valco, Supro, and Gretsch combos of the ’60s. It features the relatively obscure 6973 power tube that imparts a different sonic signature from the EL84-based models that comprise the bulk of the Goodsell product line. The Valpreaux has a simplified front-end similar to the Super 17 with the same award-winning tremolo and non-intrusive reverb, as well as an ultra-transparent post-phase inverter master volume. Richard Goodsell believes that this amplifier, if for no other reason, should exist to be matched with a Telecaster in the bridge position because of its ultra-high clean headroom. In this segment, we get to check out Scumback’s M75 65W speaker demoed by a Friedman Naked head. Scumback describes the M75 as being a warm, detailed midrange enhanced guitar speaker with smooth overdrive and distortion tones. Great sound right out of the box due to factory aging, design and break-in procedures. This is a superb tone and sound recreation of the G12M Pre Rola era “Greenback” that was used in Marshall stacks and combos, and many other British amps of the era such as Vox, Orange, Sound City. www.premierguitar.com PG’s Joe Coffey is On Location at the 2010 LA Amp Show where he checks in at the Kauer Guitars room. In this segment, Doug Kauer of Kauer Guitars shows off his newest prototype of the Double Hollow model. a prototype of his Daylighter hollowbody model. It features a fully-carved Eastern maple back (his Daylighters typically have a flat Spanish cedar back) and a 4″ Spanish cedar core block which is attached to the Spanish cedar top. Kauer describes the guitar as having 60-70% more internal volume. Initially, Kauer was disappointed because he was hoping the guitar would be somewhat ES-175-ish, but he was happy to discover the guitar is very much like an ES-335. www.premierguitar.com PG’s Chris Kies is On Location at the 2010 LA Amp Show where he swings by the Friedman Amplification room. In this video segment, we get to check out Friedman’s Dirty Shirley and Naked heads. The Dirty Shirley sounds like Jimmy Page on the early Zeppelin records. Watch our video demo and decide just how accurate that statement is. The Dirty Shirley is a 6L6-based head with a tube rectifier. Friedman describes the amp as being loosely based on a JTM45 platform, but the amp does have a Gain control and Master Volume, too. In comparison to a lot of Friedman’s other popular amps (Naked, Brown Eye), the Dirty Shirley is a little more “classic” and has no switches and no effects loop—just great rockin’ tone.
